Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
The deepest quantitative paper in the catalog. Its largest section is statistics applied under time pressure, and the arithmetic has to be right the first time.
The paper carries 175 questions in total: 160 that are scored and 15 unscored pretest items that do not count toward your result.
The Quality Engineer Primer is still being written. Its practice questions go up once each one is checked against the Body of Knowledge, and the volumes will be linked here once they are published.
What the CQE examination covers
The Body of Knowledge divides into 7 sections.
| Section | Topic |
|---|---|
| I | Management and Leadership |
| II | The Quality System |
| III | Product, Process, and Service Design |
| IV | Product and Process Control |
| V | Continuous Improvement |
| VI | Quantitative Methods and Tools |
| VII | Risk Management |
Section by section
I — Management and Leadership
The engineer's obligation when the documented requirements are met but the risk is not addressed. The primer treats professional judgment as an examinable skill and gives the mechanism: document the concern, route it through the defined risk process, and never rely on a verbal reservation.
II — The Quality System
Document and record control, audits, and the quality system as an architecture rather than a binder. The primer focuses on the controls that prevent unintended use, which is where real systems fail and where the examination aims.
III — Product, Process, and Service Design
Design review, reliability, FMEA and the tolerance decisions that get locked in early. Severity is taught as the one rating better controls cannot reduce, which is why equal risk priority numbers do not mean equal risk.
IV — Product and Process Control
Control plans, measurement systems and the difference between monitoring and controlling. A characteristic with a method and a frequency but no reaction plan is being watched, not controlled — and the primer builds the reaction plan.
V — Continuous Improvement
Improvement methodology at engineer depth: the tools, when each is the wrong choice, and how to tell a real gain from ordinary month-to-month variation. Two data points are never a trend.
VI — Quantitative Methods and Tools
The largest and most feared section. Probability, distributions, inference, design of experiments and statistical process control, each worked on numbers you can check. Confidence, prediction and tolerance intervals are separated explicitly because the examination offers them as distractors for one another.
VII — Risk Management
Risk assessment where the hazard has never occurred. Historical frequency is a poor estimator for events that are physically possible but unobserved, and the primer teaches assessment by mechanism and exposure instead.
Practice questions
The CQE bank is still being written. Every item has to be traceable to the published Body of Knowledge before it goes on the site, and nothing goes up until it is. The certifications that are ready are listed below.
Free practice tests are live for eight other certifications, and the trivia rounds cover all of them.
